History of Greater Tyler Association of Realtors
The Tyler Real Estate Board was organized in 1945. K. M. McLaughlin was the first President. Charter members included McLaughlin, Glover Tunnell, L. J. Stevenson, W. R. Pounders, Leon Kent and Mike Matise. They met in the Blackstone Building on North Broadway. In 1946 they received their Charter from the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS. Louise Welborne was hired as secretary. Later the Board moved to 220 South Bois D’Arc until the Board office was built on South Broadway–its present location–in 1965. Cleo Payne became the secretary in 1962 and retired in December of 1991 as Executive Vice President. Mary Lou Whitham, RCE, became the Executive Officer December 1, 1991 and presently serves in that position.
The MLS was organized March 16, 1953 and computerized in 1980. In 1953, there were 24 members. Robert J. Henderson was the first Chairman. Other members of the original MLS Committee were J. O. Daughtry, Mike Matise, Glover Tunnell, and S. C. Haygood. After two years of MLS service, a newspaper ad shows that 53 million dollars in Tyler residential, Commercial & Farm Property had been bought and sold through the service.
Glover Tunnell served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Texas Association of REALTORS in 1953 and 1954 and Vice-President in 1955. He was then elected as President of TAR in 1956. The state organization was known as the Texas Real Estate Association (TREA) at that time. The national organization was known as the National Association of Real Estate Boards (NAREB).
In 1985, an addition to the Board offices was completed doubling the size of the facility. The parking lot behind the building was completed in 1993.
In 1994, the Tyler Board of REALTORS and the Wood County Board of REALTORS voted to merge the two boards and change the name of the organization to the Greater Tyler Association of REALTORS. The jurisdiction of the association covers Smith and Wood Counties.
