On January 11, 2008, Bank of America announced that the bank would buy Countrywide Financial for $4.1 billion. The acquisition closed on July 1, 2008 and gave the bank a substantial market share of the mortgage business, and access to Countrywide’s expertise, technology, and employees for servicing mortgages.

Countrywide provides mortgage servicing for more than nine million mortgages valued at $1.4 trillion as of December 2007. This purchase made Bank of America the leading mortgage originator and servicer in the United States, controlling about a quarter of the home loan market.
